Daryl O'Neill was involved in a motorcycle mishap late Saturday afternoon (March 6) on Hwy 5 near his home in McKinney.

Updated Tuesday (03/23/04) Morning
From Daryl via email:
I'm trying to line up some "company" for myself, (daytime, 8-5) for the week.
I need a little support. Just someone to sit with me so my "girlfriend" isn't tied up taking care of me each day.
Wonderful to have friends, and if you could take a 3-4 hour slot some day, please call me on my cell phone at
(972) 342-1791. Today is pretty well covered, but this afternoon I could use a couple hours of assistance from someone.
I'm at Hwy 121 and Hwy 75 in McKinney.

Updated Friday (03/19/04) Afternoon
From Dicky Hunter
Daryl will be released from the hospital and going home in the next couple of days.  The surgery on his broken legs was highly successful and with the help of bio-mechanics he is even able to walk around a little.

Updated Tuesday (03/16/04) Morning
From Daryl via email:
NO surgery today (3/16).  Surgery is now scheduled for Wednesday after they find a donor cadaver to pull some ligaments from....

Frankendaryl....

Updated Monday 03/15/04) Afternoon
Daryl is feeling better and is much more receptive to having visitors now.

He is in building "6-Hob", room H-606.  It is a larger room with a new phone number of (214) 818-5606.

Daryl is getting better and he is surprising his medical team on the speed of his recovery which as Martha would say, "is a good thing."

Updated Monday Morning
From Daryl via email:
I've surgery on left leg tomorrow (3/15), then the "right leg doctor" and the "left leg doctor" are having a standoff on which allows weight-bearing first...

I expect to be home within a week, in wheelchair.

No permanent damage!

The following was sent to me by a friend today, and I think the anonymous author got it pretty right...

Daryl

Bike Rider's Creed

I ride because I enjoy the freedom I feel from being exposed to the elements, and the vulnerability to the danger that is intrinsic to riding.

I do not ride because it is fashionable to do so.

I ride my machine, not wear it. My machine is not a symbol of status. It exists simply for me, and me alone.

My machine is not a toy. It is an extension of my being, and I will treat it accordingly, with the same respect as I have for myself.

I strive to understand the inner-working of my machine, from the most basic to the most complex. I learn everything I can about my machine, so that I am reliant upon no one but myself for its health and well-being.

I strive to constantly better my skill of control over my machine. I will know its limits, and use my skill to become one with my machine so that we may keep each other alive. I am the master, it is the servant. Working together in harmony, we become an invincible team.

I do not fear death. I will, however, do all possible to avoid death prematurely. Fear is the enemy, not death. Fear on the highway leads to death, therefore I will not let fear be my master. I will master it.

My machine will outlive me. Therefore, they are my legacy. I will care for them for future bikers to cherish as I have cherished them, whoever they may be.

I do not ride to gain attention, respect, or fear from those that don't ride, nor do I wish to intimidate or annoy them. For those that do not know me, all I ask from them is to ignore me. For those that desire to know me, I will share with them the truth of myself, so that they might understand me and to ease their fear toward others like me.

I will never be the aggressor on the highway. However, should others mess with me, their aggression will be dealt with in as severe manner as I can cast upon them.

I will show respect to other bikers more experienced or knowledgeable than I am. I will learn from them all I can. However, if my respect is not acknowledged or appreciated, it will end.

I will not show disrespect to other bikers less experienced or knowledgeable than I am. I will teach them what I can. However, if they show me disrespect, they will be bitch-slapped.

It will be my task to mentor new riders, that so desire, into the lifestyle, so that the breed shall continue. I shall instruct them, as I have been instructed by those before me. I shall preserve and honor traditions of bikers before me, and I shall pass them on unaltered.

I will not judge other bikers on their choice of machine, their appearance, or profession. I will judge them only on their conduct as bikers. I am proud of my accomplishment as a biker, though I will not flaunt them to others. If they ask, I will share them.

I will stand ready to help any other biker that truly needs my help. I will never ask another biker to do for me what I can do for myself. I am not a part-time biker. I am a biker when, and where-ever I go. I am proud to be a biker, and hide my chosen lifestyle from no one. I ride because I love freedom, independence, and the movement of the ground beneath me. But most of all, I ride to better understand myself, my machine, the lands in which I ride, and to seek out and know other bikers like myself.

Updated Monday (03/08/04) afternoon.
As of 2pm Monday Daryl has not yet been to surgery.

The following is from Jay McCurry who was following behind Daryl and observed the incident.

RIDING THE SPEED LIMIT, CLEAR FIELD OF VISION, CARELESS DRIVER SIGNALED RIGHT AND TURNED LEFT AS DARYL WAS PASSING AND HE COLLIDED WITH THE FORD FI50 BETWEEN THE CAB AND WHEEL WELL. CLEARLY IN MY VIEW AS WELL AS MY TESTIMONY TO THE POLICE THE TRUCK TURNED INTO HIM. HE NEVER HIT THE BRAKES OR EVEN LET OFF THE THROTTLE.
HIS BUDS IN MCKINNEY HELPED WITH THE SCOOTER.
AFTER SURGERY DARYL WILL BE IN THE ORTHOPEDIC BLDG.

Daryl O'Neill was involved in a motorcycle mishap late Saturday afternoon on Hwy 5 near his home in McKinney. Daryl was Care-Flighted to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.  Daryl was riding with Jay McCurry who became the on-scene commander and arranged for Daryl's care flight and looked after his '79 Triumph Bonneville T-140E.  The accident involved two teen age girls in a pickup truck who were about to make a right turn with their right turn signal on when suddenly they turned left instead right in front of Daryl.

Daryl's legs are broken and one requires surgery which is scheduled for today (Monday). In addition, Daryl has several severely bruised if not broken ribs, a punctured lung and seven stitches to the head. He was wearing his helmet and none of his injuries are life threatening. Although the paramedics cut his jacket off they did save all his classic patches for which Daryl is most grateful. Everything considered Daryl is in good spirits and other than being sore here and there he just wants things to hurry up and heal.

Daryl's room number is 1123 in the Roberts building on the eleventh floor. He has his laptop computer and expects to be able to receive emails. His email address is daryl.oneill@alcatel.com

We will keep this page updated as new information becomes available.

Get well soon Daryl!
