Sam Wheeler - RIP
Desperately sad to hear this - Sam was the Grand Marshall at the NTNOA LOP Rallye. Despite his amazing career and achievements - he was a humble and self-effacing man who kept us gripped
with his stories of the salt and his career in the motorcycle industry - really likeable. Sam was our Lake O' the Pines Rallye Grand Marshal in 2006 (http://ntnoa.org/06loprecap.htm) and attended our 2009 rallye. (http://ntnoa.org/09loprecap.htm) Sam Wheeler spent a lifetime pursuing land-speed greatness, and is unique among the top motorcycle contenders in that he designed, built and piloted his own machines in the quest to break
the 400 mph mark. Details on the wreck are still a bit sketchy, but Sam will always be remembered for his passion for streamliner motorcycles, the first of which he built when he was still in high school back in
1963. Mr. Wheeler was truly a legend in his own time, and he will be missed within the hard-core, land-speed record chasing fans and competitors. May he rest in peace. The cover from that Raffle Commando he won (and promptly sold to me) in 2006. I had him sign the original (after it got painted, obviously) and I got a replacement for the Raffle Bike.
