2014 British Invasion / Spring Hill Country Ride.

Our annual Spring Hill Country ride is a gathering of British & European vintage motorcycles. This four day event is centered around Leakey, TX in the middle of the Twisted Sisters (hwy 335,336 & 337).

The weather was next to perfect for the entire event with cool mornings and warm afternoons. This year's event was a huge success in large part due to the work of many volunteers. Mike Mediterraneo coordinated lodging accommodations with the Historic Leakey Inn and the Frio Springs.  Deb Rose and Mike coordinated the schedule of events for the three days.

Thanks to Richard Asprey and Aggressive Insurance for the kegs of Shiner Bock, Thursday night’s Pizza at Panjo's Pizza on the Frio and Saturday night's steak dinner. Thanks also to Bailie Burke and Dennis Tackett who helped prepare the food.  Thanks to club VP Randy Bauer and Robb Green for driving down to Uvalde on Wednesday to pick up the large smoker.  Special thanks again go to Scot Patterson who did an outstanding job cooking the steaks.

Although the NTNOA’s official hill country ride starts on Thursday seven adventurous members started out the previous Saturday for a few days riding in and around Big Bend National Park. The seven were Richard Asprey, Dennis Tackett, Michael Mediterraneo, Reid Schulze, Shaun Guy, Bailey Burk and Ross Hollands from Australia.

Bob Hagemann, NTNOA president Clay Walley and George Tuttle started out on Tuesday and met up with the adventurous seven on Wednesday in Rocksprings. Berwyn Henderson and Alton Gillespie also arrived in Rocksprings towing trailers loaded with vintage Brit bikes. In addition, Bruce Fishlock and Brad Earl rode to Rocksprings. All told there were 14 members enjoying a steak dinner Wednesday night at the newly opened Rocksprings Bar & Grill.

Most everyone else arrived in Leakey on Thursday including racer Ryan Ambrose.  Ryan arrived towing two of Richard's enclosed trailers - yes two.  This was Ryan's first time in the hill country and although he wasn't supposed to work on anyone's vintage Brit bike he saved the day when the clutch on Richard's custom 540cc Norton single failed.  Ryan was able to diagnose and fix the problem as only a skilled and knowledgeable vintage Brit bike mechanic could much to Richard's delight.

Thursday night was Pizza night at Panjo's Pizza on the Frio which is on 337 toward Vanderpool in Leakey.   Deb Rose arranged a special club discount at the Buckhorn Bar and Grill for Friday night's dinner.   As is customary there was a Saturday afternoon group ride to Alan Johncock’s Lone Star Museum and Ace Café just north of Vanderpool.  Prior to the ride a race was planned between Clay riding his '56 T110 Tiger and Ryan on Richard's Norton single.  The start of the race was to be determined by Clay enroute to the museum.  The finish line was at the lookout on 377.  However, Clay decided to use deception (cheat) as he continued on to the lookout without ever stopping.

The Saturday night dinner consisted of Steak with all the trimmings thanks again to Richard and Aggressive Insurance.  During the Saturday night dinner f
ormer BMOA president Jack Updyke presented a $500 check from the BMOA to NTNOA Treasurer Mike Mediterraneo to sponsor the firewood at the 30th Annual Lake O' the Pines Rallye during our Spring Hill Country Ride.

Unfortunately there was a scheduling conflict with the All British & European Car Day at White Rock Lake.  However, Wendy and David Griffiths stepped up and volunteered to sell raffle bike tickets at the event.  Their hard work organizing and transporting the raffle bike to and from White Rock Lake paid off with substantial raffle bike sales.  Click here for Paul Valentine's photos of the ABCD event.

There were no incidences this year but one drew the attention of Jake Sanchez, a local and notorious State Policeman.
